Looking ahead…

Ten weeks to turn Black Canyon 100k into a better Canyons 100k. Recovery week is over, was able to put a couple runs and rides in around race directing a 100 Hour event, a great sign I wasn’t too trashed from 62 miles in the desert. Excited to get back to work with even more experience and learnings going much over my 2-3 hour comfort zone.

Mileage, elevation, strength, and trail will be the focus. Not the easiest in Houston but have a training trip on tap and looking at some build up races too.

Welp, she did it again!

When the goal becomes simply to finish, I wasn’t going to do it without some company and at mile 50 there she was waiting with a pacer bib on ready to go.

Had a mostly smooth and enjoyable first 50k and came in to the halfway aid station in good spirits thinking eight hours was still possible, but things turned quickly into survival mode. Fueling was strong, I just didn’t have the legs after four hours of trail. 60-75k was rough and once again I thought I’d be pulling the plug at 79k. Unlike last years 2.5h delayed start we had tons of sunshine left and decided not to leave any meat on the bone of a beautiful day. #STAYOUTTHERE

Last year @rachneffy paced this ~12mi section it took us 2h19m (my marathon PR!) but this year we had a good groove, me pulling the uphills (1000ft) and trying to keep up the rest of the time. 2h5m to sneak under 10h again for a few minutes faster than last year. 9h57 down to 9h52 after a much slower start and middle.

Loved the new Altra Timo 5 BOA’s and Rachel was rocking the Mont Blanc BOA 👟

This sport is hard! I continue to learn and explore the boundaries of my limits in all these niche disciplines of the sport. Huge congrats to that record breaking podium and all the runners!

Welp, she did it again!

Thermaling with the Birds

That landing though 🤌 What a great flight down at Cowboy Up on Sunday, early February and was able to stay up over 30 minutes in broken windy lift.

This video gives a great overview of the aerotow process, searching for lift, thermaling, and coming in for a landing. This method for getting into the air uses a dragonfly ultralight with a short tow line back to my harness attachment. Both pilots have a release mechanism with mine being the primary. I’m flying a @willswing U2 hang glider in a pod harness which has bomber door style leg zips to stay aerodynamic and warm.

Most the flight is spent scanning the air for traffic and signs of thermal lift (warm air rising). The best indicator are the masters of the air; eagles, hawks, vultures, and even pelicans, swallows, and many other types of birds. In this flight I flew high above a bald eagle and had a super close up with some vultures. Other signs can include debris like grass or garbage, smell of earth or smoke, and even sound carries all the way inside thermals. This flight I was mainly feeling the rushing air and wing pressure along with the vario instrument beeping away letting me know I was going up. It was a really strong south wind and the thermals drift with the wind so staying local (not going cross country) meant leaving lift. While it was gusty, coming in fast on approach kept me on rails for one of my best landings.

Race Week AND New Shoe Drop 🔥

The Timp 5 BOA by @altrarunning dropped today! Just in time for the @blackcanyonultras 100k Saturday.

Fortunately I’ve been putting these shoes to the test the past few months and feel confident with the performance and comfort of this awesome trail shoe. The @boafitsystem provides an almost custom fit wrap over the foot and the ride is smooth.

Excited to be back in the desert 🌵 coming in with a different mindset and better prepared for a redemption run. Whether @rachneffy paces me again this year or not I know it will be an incredible day.

Saturday Night ✨

74+ Laps 😵‍💫

Finished off 2024 with a 2h44m marathon, followed by a 17mi run, and kicked off the New Year with a 10mi / 1h run on three consecutive days at @snowdropcc with the @michelobultrapr Relay Team taking the win! I was part of the 2019 record setting team with 443 miles and this years second best performance and only other team to break 400mi alongside the @wildsense_goods crew for 55 hours! The 3h-2h-1h three day workout was a great kick into gear for training.

Fun getting to run along with so many TROT runners and for a great cause. Definitely have to solo at Snowdrop one day…

Team Altra - Year 12

From my first pair of Lone Peaks in 2013, @altrarunning has been there every step of the way since. Thousands of miles, almost 200 races from 800 meters to 100km all over the world, records and memories.

Between the miles I’ve enjoyed many aspects of being an Altra athlete, for sure the team members that make up this family, working on product testing, fun retreats and content, relays and pacing. I can’t thank Altra enough for the support along the way. We believe in each other and that’s why this partnership has worked for so long. Health and longevity, playing the long game, has been my recipe for performance and Altra footwear is the integral part of it.

No slowing down yet! I’m still chasing my limits of time and distance, competing for top spots, and eyeing new challenges. Up next, Black Canyon 100k!

If you raced yesterday, I highly recommend some rest and active recovery days and weeks. While I ran a marathon yesterday, I stayed controlled and treated it as a training run with a number of goals, none of which were a specific time other than my pacing duties.

You can’t always measure workouts and races by the time result. Did you recover faster? Is a great metric and one of my main goals from yesterday, being able to keep training this week. Had a few sore spots that worked their way out in the first two miles but felt good and smooth on the old janky treadmill for a 4mi @gozwiftrun shakeout in the comfy @altrarunning FWD VIA 👟

Fastest Marathon in a Jacket 🥶

Got the job done today, 1:10:55 through half marathon and pushed on getting as big as I could in those head winds for as long as possible before heading into cruise control mode and letting the women’s race unfold in front of me.

I’ll be covering the women’s races on @abc13houston tonight for The Finish Line show but I have to say it was incredible to watch the even keeled @imtinyrik run like an absolute marathon veteran for 2nd and top American in a PR of 2:22.

I was super happy with my run, sometimes you need to measure your workout/race by the effort it takes or the recovery, and to run a smooth 2:24 sure beats some rougher faster times I’ve had. Didn’t crush myself and feeling great with three weeks till the Black Canyon 100k especially with my gut training today of ~40g/carbs every ~17 minutes of purely @never.second. 2:24 for top Master’s runner (yay 40!) and top Houstonian earning another local elite spot to the 2026 @chevronhoustonmarathon.

Too many PR’s to list today for the incredible @hardlooprun athletes, proud coach!!!

H Town Shakeout 🔥

Great to have prior Houston Half champion @jakehtbz_robertson back in H Town Speed City, this time for the full send marathon, along with his brother in-law @masai_alex. Gave them a good tour of some of Houston’s best running and got to see some new Kenyan drill.

🔥 Hot Work

Huge thanks to @hotworxkatyfulshear for setting @rachneffy and I up in the sauna this year. There are so many benefits, there is really is no reason not to add this to your regime.

Personally I have some big racing goals coming up, the Houston Marathon Sunday serving as one of my last longer hard runs before the Black Canyon 100k three weeks later. While it’s going to be chilly Sunday and last years trail started in the snow before heating up, the performance increases and adaptations of the sauna are great for cold or hot race prep.

Tonight I ran a 15:37 5km tempo and finished up with a fast set of 4 x 1-minute before the mobility sauna session. Sunday was similar with a hilly 5mi tempo before a sauna spin session adding in some very low gear 30” reps.

Tonight I ran a 15:37 5km tempo and finished up with a fast set of 4 x 1-minute before the mobility sauna session. Sunday was similar with a hilly 5mi tempo before a sauna spin session adding in some very low gear 30” reps.

Marathon Project 2025 🤩

Just finished up 20 miles Zwift’n on the treadmill to learn the @marathonproj is back for 2025. Stoked to see @coachbenrosario1 revive the one time pandemic pro race which will now also include a public marathon the day before an elite event.

This was such a pivotal breakthrough race for me, a rather comfortable 2:20 pacing @sarahall3 to the win in a top 3 all-time American performance. I would later that day find @keiradamato USADA test papers blowing in the wind and that’s how we first connected (other than that near elbow I just noticed for the first time in these pictures).

Might have to add this one to the race list next year!

Next up, back on pacing duties for 2:19 at @chevronhoustonmarathon

Beast Coast’n 🍁

Our ankles survived. Had a beautiful day on the trails of Lookout Mountain in Montreat with @rachneffy as the road trip East continues. Feeling the 18mi hilly long run from the day before and hitting another 1500ft of climbing on the rugged lead covered rocky ankle breaking trails. There was a slight dusting of snow and still a ton of debris down from the hurricane in this area surrounding Asheville. We loved the area and all the little shops, great to see it coming back after the devastation. A lot of appreciation to the first responders who are still weeks later working in the area and local companies like @recoverbrands for doing great things.

New favorite trail shoe.. @altrarunning Timp Boa, but you’ll have to wait a little longer to get your feet in these, worth the wait!

Super light conditions but able to get three laps in with a ton of other pilots in the air. This is the @flybgd Echo 2 paraglide on a @airdesign_gliders SockSL, super light hike and fly setup. Great to practice two reverse and one forward launch, and nail the target landing.

Loving the @opticnerveeyewear Stone Cat’s 😎 and @altrarunning Timp Hiker boot keeping the feet warm and protected.

#MedalMonday from the @marinecorpsmarathon 50k

“Running on Empty” I had dedicated this race to Evan and @mitocanada, a fitting distance as it was the first time I ventured into ultra territory with Evan’s dad @blainepenny 12 years ago. The power of running for something and someone else is truly amazing.

Yesterday was not easy, I came in a little undertrained and the day did not come with as much flow-state as I had last year under worse conditions. My stomach was off and quads felts shot within the first 10km but I was running the pace and let the rhythm happen. The last half I began to embrace that feeling of depletion and exhaustion- truly running on empty.

The competition kept me honest with second place staying within one minute of me for nearly 45km till I was able to open a larger gap, but was happy to pull someone in under 3 hours for their first time.

It was a great weekend in DC with @altrarunning and @recoverbrands as we all gear up for @jfk50mile in just a few weeks.

My fifth time running under three hours in the 50k, 2:56:35 for the repeat win 🏆 Thanks for all the cheers, pictures, and support!

I would like to dedicate this 50k to Evan Penny and the entire @mitocanada family. We lost Evan this last week after a 20y battle with mitochondrial disease. Sending all my love to the best parents and sister he could have ever asked for; @penny_sarah, Julia, and @blainepenny. The legacy launched through Evan has helped drive research, care, and support for so many with rare disease.

It was just 12 years ago I saw this fundraiser event called Running on Empty, to deplete your mitochondria of all energy through endurance to raise awareness and funds for Mito Canada hosted by Blaine. I emailed him the night before his 100 mile journey explaining I’d never run more than 20mi as a miler and I’d join him the last few hours. He replied “my wife Sarah will pick you up at 5 AM from the TransCanada gas station and you can do the last 50k”. My ultra running was born because of this, 55km (liars), run and we’d go on to break a Guinness World Record together and many miles. Requesting a flyby 🪽

Did a thing with my wing girl Rachel and relocated the family and business to an aviation community!

It has been far from sunshine and rainbows the past few months dealing with a literal shit show of septic and other surprises but we’re here and even helped the community put on the annual fly-in last weekend. Our neighbors are amazing and have some fun toys to get us all off the ground. Cubs, stearman biplanes, and more!

The TROT HQ is now a hangar and it’s great to have the business in-house to cut overhead and build. The girls are thriving with some space to explore and I’m loving the new running and cycling options too. I just earned my hang glider 3 rating with aero tow and paraglide 2 rating earlier this year.

Last nights supper moon brought some smooth air for some fun on the backyard ridge 🌕 🪂

Forty Shoes | One Run

Celebrated the 40th birthday last month with 40 kilometers in 40 different Altra shoes. It was a good run down memory lane putting back on some of my most nostalgic shoes; from WR’s, to prototypes, to discontinued, modified, road or trail, new and old favorites. Even ran the soles right off the original concept spike. I did not account for how long the transitions would take, 6 hours in 100+ heat of mid-August Texas summer was a bad idea, but thankfully embraced the metric system!

Faster as a Master

Turned 40 this week and not giving up on finding out how fast or how far I can run. Excited to join the masters age category while still competing in the open class.

For my birthday I ran 40 x 1km, each of them in a different pair of @AltraRunning shoes! (Stay tuned for video). It was pretty terrible as I didn’t start till 10 AM and finished at 4 PM, in Texas, it was well over 100 degrees. Needless to say I am ready to race direct Habanero Hundred next weekend.

While my debut masters marathon will have to wait, I was hoping to be in Sydney for the age group championships but you have to qualify as a 40yo, and while I’m registered for Chicago the timing won’t work. Looks like Houston will be the first attempt to break the 2:19 PR.

I’m excited to repeat last Fall’s schedule as a fun test to see if I can improve upon my times that I set a high standard for myself:

Oct 27: @marinecorpsmarathon 50k with Altra and @recoverbrands

Nov 23: @jfk50mile with Altra

Will be at a few other events along the way and of course at all the @trailracingovertexas races and new film festival so be sure to join me for a belated party there!
